Cyfarthfa Castle in Cyfarthfa Park is the most iconic spot in Merthyr Tydfil and it is celebrating two hundred years of existence. This book looks at the building in its setting. It looks at how the changes of use were achieved. It looks at some 19th. Century Crawshay family members and their activities but at the same time it goes beyond all those things.
Across two hundred years these chapters also keep in mind the local people and the wider Merthyr Tydfil area community.
What of the ‘ordinary’ locals there in the 19th. century, scrubbing the castle’s hallways and kitchen or poaching the pheasants and rabbits from its land? In the 20th. century, why and how was ‘A People’s Park’ created, and a school, when the days of the Crawshay dynasty were gone? What workers made the park a much-valued public space, a place of beauty and leisure and public events?
The Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery has occupied the rooms of the Crawshay family’s home for more than a century. How have local people experienced that Museum and Cyfarthfa Park in times of fun, of war, of childhood? What kinds of things are embedded in the local memory where Cyfarthfa Castle and Park are concerned?
